ASTM A709 is the standard specification for plates, bars, and shapes used for structural steel bridges and applies to Carbon HSLA (High Strength Low Alloy), Q&T (Quench & Tempered), and stainless-steel metals. ASTM A709 grades 36,50,70, and 100 include designations for enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance (W). As a non-fracture critical steel, ASTM A709 is designed to meet impact requirements in both fracture critical tension components and non-critical fracture tension components. These standards are based on American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) requirements for tension components in bridges. Metals USA carries a robust inventory of ASTM A709 grade 50 material which is commonly used in high-rise buildings, bridges, oil rigs, wind farms, and anywhere greater strength, structural efficiency, and optimum corrosion resistance are required.
